Ferhat Kurlu was born in Ordu in 1976. He took illumination decoration classes while he was a student at Ondokuz Mayıs University Theology Faculty in 1993, he took his first ruq’ah classes and started gaining knowledge about classical Turkish Islamic arts in this period. Kurlu started studying thuluth-naskh with Hasan Çelebi in 1996 and continued for four years, then he received his thuluth-naskh license at a ceremony at IRCICA. He won first prize in many competitions, participated in many group exhibitions both at home and abroad, and held personal exhibitions. He wrote the belt (a stripe on a wall filled with khatt scripture) and marble scriptures of many mosques, masjids, fountains, tablets and domes in and around Istanbul. The students Kurlu trained are Cemali Gündoğdu, Afşin Okur, Safiye Bayuk, Selim Hamidi, Zeki Haşimi, Yuşa Abdullah and Şahrayyan Siracuddin.
