Müzeyyen Aslan was born in 1986 in Ankara, Türkiye. She became involved in performing arts at an early age and worked as an actress at Ankara Başkent Theatre between 2002 and 2013. Turning her focus to traditional Turkish theatre, she studied the art of puppetry under Mehmet Tahir İkiler and learned the art of Karagöz shadow theatre from İshak II. Tekgül. Through this master–apprentice tradition, she gained first-hand experience in the aesthetic, technical, and ethical transmission of Karagöz and puppetry. Throughout her artistic career, Aslan has participated in numerous national and international festivals and cultural events, and her works have been presented on various platforms. These include the Ankara State Theatres Little Ladies Little Gentlemen Festival, the International Hadi Poyrazoğlu Puppet and Karagöz Festival, the International Bursa Karagöz Puppet and Shadow Theatre Festival, the Vienna Lasofantenfest Children’s Puppet Festival, as well as traditional puppetry and Karagöz exhibitions. In addition to her stage work, she has been actively engaged in education, delivering seminars for teachers within the Turkish Ministry of National Education and conducting workshops and training programs for different age groups. In 2025, she was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Bearer (Karagöz Art) by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In the same year, her mastery was formally recognized when she was ceremonially awarded the master’s apron by her mentor Mehmet Tahir İkiler, affirming her place within the traditional lineage. She co-founded Karagöz’ün Kukla Atölyesi (Karagöz’s Puppet Workshop) in Çanakkale together with Nazım Öney Olcaytu, where she continues to carry out production, educational, and performance activities. She currently maintains an active workshop in Çanakkale, where she regularly presents stage performances and conducts workshops for children, youth, and adults.
