Born in the Simav district of Kütahya in 1956, Altınay graduated from Ankara Girls' Teacher Training School in 1979. After having worked for thirty-three years as an embroidery teacher and head of embroidery workshop at a vocational high school in Izmir, Altınay retired in 2013. She continues to work in the field of embroidery, one of the important elements of Turkish culture, in order to keep this art branch alive and make it popular.
